Highways data, national standards, and applied AI
I work on the systems and standards that sit underneath how roadworks are planned, permitted and recorded in the UK — and I build software in the same space.
My substantive post is Road & Street Works Systems Supervisor. Alongside that I’m Vice Chair of JAG(UK), Chair of NEJAG, Co-Chair of NEHAUC, a member of the NUAR Senior Stakeholder Advisory Group, and part of the HAUC(UK) working group rewriting the Coordination Code of Practice.

The future of street works: AI, automation and robotics Much of what we call future tech is already live. All of it rests on data quality, and on an unanswered question about who is responsible when an automated process gets it wrong.
I set out to connect England’s streetworks systems. I ended up mapping a third of the world’s. What building the StreetWorks SDK taught me about how differently countries handle roadworks data — and the difference between publishing a feed and running a register.
Work adopted beyond its original scope
- Performance Based Inspection calculation tool — published, then adopted by the DfT as a national template now used by English highway authorities and utilities
- One.Network API roadworks reporting — designed and built, since replicated by more than 20 highway authorities
- Street Works Sentinel Suite — four free desktop tools built on Street Manager data, given to highway authorities and utilities alike
- Street Manager guides — video walkthroughs of Street Manager processes, featured by HAUC(UK) on their innovation hub
- DTF 8.1 / SR101 validation tool — corrects the structural faults in DTF 8.1 exports that cause GeoPlace SR101 validation failures
- streetworksai.co.uk — an AI assistant for street works guidance, custom-trained in 2023 before the API route existed
